We embody L.A.’s unique blend of media and tech culture.
Hailing from a family of screenwriters and talent agents, founder Kate Ludicrum grew up surrounded by innovative movie magic on the Universal Studios backlot. Intending to create vivid science fiction worlds, she enrolled in the exclusive L.A. County High School for the Arts. But as the digital age exploded, Kate began to wonder: why stick to fiction? Why not work on intelligent robots for real?
Thus began a 10 year journey in academic neuroscience. Becoming a student of biomedical engineering, Kate performed research in Brain-Computer Interface at USC and Caltech, developing prosthetic devices to treat paralysis, traumatic brain injury, and movement disorders.
Outside academia, Kate found her knowledge of electronics and human factors in demand. In 2012, she founded Ludicrum Labs to build interactive systems for games, costumes, and immersive events. As the client roll grew, projects became more ambitious. In 2016, Kate shuttered her one-person side hustle and relaunched as CEO of a creative and technical talent network: Island in Space.
Since then, Island in Space has brought new products to market across multiple industries. Teams are built from a community of experts in fields ranging from aerospace to animation, at any scale from garage prototype to global production.
